How Much Protein Does a Horse Really Need?
Protein requirements vary depending on age, activity level, and physiological status. According to the National Research Council (NRC), the average mature horse at maintenance needs a diet that contains approximately 8–10% crude protein. Horses in moderate to heavy work may benefit from 11–12%, while young, growing horses, broodmares, and lactating mares may require 14–16% depending on individual circumstances.
As a general guideline, most healthy adult horses do well on a diet that provides 12–14% crude protein, spread across multiple high-quality sources to ensure an adequate amino acid profile. Quality matters as much—if not more—than quantity. It’s better to feed a moderate amount of high-quality protein than a large amount of poorly digestible or incomplete protein.
Good sources of high-quality protein include:

- Alfalfa hay
- Canola meal
- Lupins
- Milk proteins (for foals or specialty diets)

For most horses, feeding a well-formulated commercial feed along with good forage will meet protein needs without the risk of over- or under-supplying. Protein is vital to equine health, but more is not always better. Both protein deficiency and protein excess can result in serious health implications, ranging from poor performance and hoof problems to systemic stress and respiratory irritation. Meeting a horse’s protein needs requires more than just looking at crude protein percentages—it demands attention to the quality and amino acid composition of the diet, as well as the individual’s age, workload, and health status.
