The 73rd Annual Del Mar National Horse Show Dressage Week, April 26-29, 2018, is a world renowned competition, drawing horses and riders from around the globe to compete for World Cup points. The Del Mar Fairgrounds hosts the competitive Dressage competition as the second week in the three-week series, with Western Week kicking off the event and Hunter/Jumper Week wrapping it up. The Fairgrounds is a short drive away from the world famous Del Mar Village and the incredible Southern California coastline. It’s hard to beat the location, shopping opportunities, dining and the competition couldn’t be better.
The week hosts an array of International, special classes and qualifying classes for multiple championships, including: CDI-W, USEF Grand Prix, Intermediaire I, Young Adult ‘Brentina Cup’ National Championships, Markel/USEF Young and Developing Horse Dressage National Championships and the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships.
The special events for the week begin Thursday with the CDI Jog kicking off the International competition at 3:00PM. In the CDI Junior Rider Division, you won’t want to miss Christian Simonson and his new ride, Amy Ebeling’s FRH Rassolini. Simonson has already had success this year on his new mount, at the 2018 Global Dressage Festival Florida circuit and will be one of the eight inaugural riders of the Discover Dressage USEF/USDF Emerging Athlete program later this year.
Nick Wagman is a local up and coming star who has already started his year with success at the West Coast Dressage Festival I. He and Elizabeth Keadle’s Ferano took home the blue in both the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire I. Beverly Gepfer’s Don John made his International Grand Prix debut with Wagman at the same event, also taking home the top spot. Wagman will be one you’ll want to catch throughout the week here at The Del Mar National.
Akiko Yamazaki has famously owned some of Steffen Peters most successful rides, but she is a top rider herself, having accumulated many top placings and championships. She and her own Dutch gelding, Chopin R, are a team to watch this week as we head into the competition.
Steffen Peters is always one of the top riders participating, and this year, in addition to competing on four different horses, will be part of a very special retirement ceremony. We are honored to host the retirement of Peters’ partner, Legolas 92, on Saturday, April 28, during the G-2 Software Grand Prix Musical Freestyle. Legolas 92 is owned by Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang’s Four Winds Farm and has been ridden by Peters since 2012. Legolas 92 has had more than a respectable career, with placings in top competitions like the World Cup Finals, Pan American Games and the Olympics. We will have the honor of watching the incredible pair together one last time before he begins his new life.
With World Cup points up for grabs and top competitors from around the world coming to compete, the G-2 Software Grand Prix Musical Freestyle is the competition to see Saturday night!
