Results for The 15th Annual Sugar Bars Legacy Horse Sale

The 15th annual Sugar Bars Legacy Horse Sale was held on Sunday, September 17th at the rock pavilion on the Sheridan County Fairgrounds, in beautiful & historic Sheridan, Wyoming. Consignors from South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Saskatchewan Canada offered an exceptional lineup of horses of all ages. With the seats full, this year’s sale saw prices slightly higher on the average compared to previous sales for the weanlings; much higher for the yearlings and a slightly higher market for the saddle horses. The average on the top five weanlings was $2,480, average for the top 5 yearlings was $4,410 and the average on the top five saddle horses was $9,650.

The sale started off with the Sugar Bars Legacy Sale “WildCard”. With no colt in the ring, the auctioneer asked for bids on the “WildCard”. The winning bidder chose Lot 38- “Shiny Elsa” for their choice of the weanlings. This beautiful bay roan filly was consigned by AQHA Ranching Heritage breeder- Wetz Stirrup Ranch- LeRoy & Shirley Wetz of Vale, SD. She was sired by “Shinycolonelfreckls”- a “Shining Sparks, Freckle Charge (Sugar Bars) bred stallion and her dam was “Lonsum Pepsi” a “Pans Sugar Baby (Sugar Bars), Devil Cat Dancer“ bred mare. She was purchased by Zack Sobba of Richmond, KS for $3,500.

Swenson-Martin Ranch (Trent & Dawn Martin) of Beulah, ND was the consignor for the high selling Saddle Horse and the high selling Yearling. The saddle horses proved to be an incredible group of horses; ranging from finished rope horses, all around ranch horses and just started young horses needing a job. Lot # 90, “AMR Plenty Good”, was the high selling gelding; a four year old quiet and gentle Blue Roan Gelding. A true ranch horse and was started on heeling in the arena; this horse was so quiet they had turned him over to their seven year old son to use on the ranch. He sold for $10,500 to Chris & Leslie Evertz of Busby, MT. The high selling Yearling was “Peptos Little Catman”; a “Peptooonsmal” and “High Brow Cat”; uniquely colored stout made Gray stallion prospect. He is bred to be a cow horse; his sire has over $6,000 in NCHA earnings. He is eligible to be shown in AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenges and was purchased by Jim and Alicia Bentz of Drewsey, OR for $8,750.

The high selling Sugar Bars saddle horse gelding was “PR Loaded Pistol” and was consigned by Bill Pinz, of Baker, MT. This six year old gelding was used on the ranch: tagging, doctoring, gathering and sorting cattle. He is eligible for the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenges and was purchased by Loring Ranches of Ashby, NE for $10,000.

The high selling Sugar Bars Saddle Horse mare was sold by Haight Ranch (Dale & Carol Haight) of Hanley, Saskatchewan. Lot 68 , “HR Royal Robin”, a 2014 Bay Roan mare: this young mare was the total package: great breeding and had been started the right way. She was purchased by Joey Moore of Buffalo, WY for $6,750.

Long Ranch Quarter Horses (Glen and Janet Long) of Enning, SD had the high selling weanling stallion. Lot 13; “Lance Chance Sugar “ this buckskin colt was sired by “Paddys Shot of Sugar”; his dam is “BL Cowboys Last Chance” He was purchased by Jean Lamson, of Hanna, Alberta Canada for $3,300.

In celebration of the 15th Annual Sugar Bars Legacy Sale, the association held a buyer’s lottery for a custom made plaque that was designed, made and donated by Alder Welding of Sheridan, WY. The buyer receiving the plaque purchased 5 head of outstanding yearling and saddlehorses. Ivan Johnson of Mandaree, ND was the winner of this beautiful plaque.
