CHSRA D8- State Finals

The “Great 8” has 27 high school students headed to the Tri-County Fairgrounds Bishop in mid-June for a week of competition for the California High School Rodeo Association’s (CHSRA) annual high school state championships.

The competition, for students in the ninth through twelfth grades, kicks off Monday June 11 and runs through Saturday for the cowgirls and cowboys who finished in the top five in each of the state’s nine districts’ standings for the 2017-18 school year.

The Great 8 — CHSRA District 8 — includes riders from Riverside, Orange, San Diego and San Bernardino Counties. CHSRA is the state chapter of National High School Rodeo Association which promotes education, leadership and family values.

Champions will be crowned in barrel racing, pole bending, girls goat tying, steer wrestling and girls breakaway roping, tie down roping, team roping, bull riding, boys and girls cutting, reined cow horse and saddle bronc riding.

In order to remain eligible throughout the year, CHSRA members must remain in good standing, which includes maintaining a 2.0 G.P.A.

While at the State Finals, participants will also have the option to take part in a .22 Light Rifle and shotgun competition.

Of the approximately 45 competitors in each event, that is over 250 high school students- only four will qualify in each event for the National High School Finals Rodeo which will be held in Rock Springs, WY in July.  Over 1600 contestants travel from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia to compete at Nationals for cash, awards and scholarships.
