California thoroughbred race fans may well remember BALANCE THE BOOKS as a top contender in the 2012 Santa Anita Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf Mile.
In 2012, as a top 2 year old, he was known for his thrilling closing victories in major graded stakes races, and ranked among the top two year old race colts of the year. In less than 3 months, this precocious, Kentucky bred son of multi-millionaire, Belmont Stakes winner and Eclipse Champion LEMON DROP KID (1996), defeated many top rival 2 year old colts in dramatic fashion, in route to winning multiple graded stakes races, with earnings of $326,000 for trainer Chad C. Brown and jockey Julien Leparoux. There was talk of the Kentucky Derby possibilities, when injuries cut short his racing career early in his three year old race season. In 2013, shortly after winning the Stroll Stakes he retired from racing with career earnings of $404,596.
In 2015, BALANCE THE BOOKS was sold privately to EAS Equine Alliance, LLC, and moved to Southern California to begin his new career as a breeding stallion. His first foals out of stakes winning mares are due in 2017.
At 2, Kentucky bred BALANCE THE BOOKS broke his maiden in his second race at New York’s Saratoga, winning the $200,000 Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes (1 1/16 mi, turf). Starting his move from last place, he closed fast defeating Grade 1 stakes winner JOHA, Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Sprint Stakes winner HIGHTAIL, and Grade 1-placing stakes winner CHARMING KITTEN, etc.
BALANCE THE BOOKS followed that victory with another thrilling burst of closing speed, to win Keeneland’s $150,000 Grade 3 Bourbon Stakes (1 1/16 mi). Finishing off his 2 year old race season with another fast close, he placed a close third in the $1,000,000 Grade 1 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf (1 mi) at Santa Anita, over Group 1 multimillionaire and Champion LINES OF BATTLE, etc.
Returning to New York, BALANCE THE BOOKS, continued his winning ways at three, taking the win at Saratoga’s $100,000 Stroll Stakes after chasing down Grade 1 Arlington Million stakes winner HARDEST CORE. Soon thereafter, injuries forced his retirement from racing.
BALANCE THE BOOKS (2010) was bred in Kentucky with a royal racing pedigree. He was sired by the multi-millionaire 1999 Belmont Stakes winner and Eclipse Champion Older Horse LEMON DROP KID ($3,245,370), and line bred to Leading Sire Mr. Prospector. For many years, LEMON DROP KID has proven himself a top general sire with more than 88 stakes winners, and 41 graded stakes winners. In
2015, his top 2015 yearlings sold for $535,000, $450,000, and $400,000.
The dam of BALANCE THE BOOKS, KREISLERIANA, sold at Keeneland for $500,000 as a weanling. At 2, she was a winner in Japan, and retired with earnings of (20,185,078 yen) $166,874. Her sire was the renowned broodmare sire and multi-millionaire SEEKING THE GOLD (2nd: Grade 1- Travers and Breeder’s Cup Classic). Full sister GAILY THE PRIDE had 3 wins in Japan, earning (64,449,301 yen) $532,815. Recently, two half sisters sold at the 2016 Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale for $100,000 and $180,000, respectively.
The 2nd dam of BALANCE THE BOOKS was the outstanding, multiple European Champion race mare KOOYONGA (IRE). She had 9 wins in 24 starts (4-Grade 1 wins) racing in England, Ireland and Germany. Her honors include: Champion 3 year old filly twice in Europe and Ireland, and Champion miler in Ireland.
